Chairs for care homes
For an older person, a chair is more than a seat. It decides whether they can stand up on their own. Research gives clear pointers, and below we publish every measurement you need to compare our models.
What research says
- Seat height: a little higher helps
- Older studies recommend about 430 mm. In a 2018 care-home study, residents, carers and experts all preferred higher seats, because standing up is easier. Our care models have seats from 430 to 520 mm.
- Armrests: high and to the front
- Residents need armrests to get in and out. Armrests about 250 mm above the seat that reach the front edge help most with standing up. Slim armrests are easier to grip.
- Seat depth: not too deep
- Deep seats are a common problem: residents cannot reach the backrest. The study asks for shallower seats. The Australian standard it quotes prefers 440 mm.
- One size does not fit all
- Residents in the study asked for the same chair in several sizes. Mix seat heights in one home, and ask an occupational therapist about residents with special needs. Care home chairs guide
- Upholstery and fire rules
- Ask which fire level your building needs before you choose fabric. In the UK, BS 7176 puts hospitals on the medium level and some wards on high. Fire rules guide
